Portrait of Father Dave Klunk

Fr. Dave Klunk

Father Dave Klunk was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and lived there until the age of 7 at which time his family moved out West to California. Fr. Dave grew up in Los Alamitos where he attended local area schools. He graduated from Long Beach State with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Science and years later obtained a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Trinity College.

Fr. Dave's story started when he was 33 and was working for the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department. "I was attending my girlfriend's non-denominational Christian church," he said, "and was in the process of learning more about the difference between the faith I was raised in as a Catholic and her church." During the Sacrament of Reconciliation, he told a priest friend about his relationship with his girlfriend. The priest then asked him a bizarre question: “Have you ever thought of becoming a priest?" Fr. Dave recalled that his first reaction was, “Hello? Didn't you hear anything I was saying? I'm talking about getting married.” So who can explain what happened next? Fr. Dave said it was like his heart was torn open. He was fighting back tears. "I knew there was something there, something to what he was asking me," he said.

A priest? Fr. Dave recalled that's when the bargaining began. “C'mon, God. Don't make me be a priest," he said. "Tell you what! I'll do youth ministry. I'll do youth ministry in jail! I'll work with sick folks in the hospital.” It went on like this for several years. He loved his position at the Fire Department, he loved doing volunteer work at the Church, he loved his life the way it was. Fr. Dave recalled praying. And praying. And praying. One day he crossed paths with a nun who said something he would never forget: "Don't let good be the enemy of best." Father Dave recalled the work he had been doing at the Fire Department and the Church was all very good, but was it the best he was called to do?

In 2003, after much discernment, he left the Fire Dept. to begin studies at St John’s Seminary in Camarillo, California. In May he graduated from St John’s with a Master’s of Divinity degree and a Master’s degree in Theology. Fr. Dave was ordained a Catholic priest on June 6 and was assigned to OLQA on July 1, 2009.
