Stewardship - The Heart of Discipleship*

To be faithful stewards, is to share our unique gifts and talents in loving service to one another.

Stewardship is not new – it is biblically based.

And it is not an option – it is an integral part of our faith.

For the individual, Stewardship addresses the attitude behind how we use our many gifts to answer the call to discipleship. At the parish level, it means empowering the laity to fulfill their mission as disciples – creating an environment in which the parish can become much like the dynamic faith communities of the early Church we read about in the Acts of the Apostles. Both spiritual and temporal fruits result when a parish is committed to Stewardship.

All that we are and all that we have is a gift from a loving and generous God – our time, our talent and our treasure, plus the gifts of the earth and all its holds, our faith, our personal vocation, and our very lives. Stewardship is a way of life based on gratitude for these gifts.

We are not owners of these gifts. God gave them to us to be good stewards, to manage them for Him. These gifts are not to be used only for ourselves or to ignore (placing them under a bushel basket), but to build up the kingdom of God. (See Mathew 10:8, I Cor 12;7) We do this by loving and serving God and our neighbor.

We are accountable to God for how we have used the gifts which he has entrusted to us.

Stewardship, then, is our response to the call to be followers (disciples) of Christ. It applies to every aspect of our individual lives and to the life of the parish community.
